One Man’s Hallelujah

Once love was all I had,
But I knew I would not go mad
Because if nothing else at least I had you
But then he took you as you preach
A place that is too high to reach
Grasping up, I cried out Hallelujah

The gates above once stood wide
But that was before I let my pride
Erase the path that lead me back to you
I thought there was something more to win
But all I did was lose our kin
Now nothing will help, not even Hallelujah

The thought of you is too much to bare
Too late I realized how much I care
But none of that means anything now to you
I know we can’t go back in time,
But if we could I’d keep you mine,
I beg you to forgive me Hallelujah

By now you’re living in the cloud
But I will never escape the crowd
They want to draw me down far from you
And once I’m locked up down below
There will be no way for you to hear me so
To no one, I’ll be screaming Hallelujah

Beloved I’m still chained to earth
And there’s no hope for my rebirth
But you don’t care what happens to me do you?
Everyday I think of ending the pains,
But I’m too afraid of the flames,
Each second my heart still beats is Hallelujah

 Hallelujah
 Hallelujah
 Hallelujah
 Hallelujah.

Inspired by Leonard Cohen’s song “Hallelujah”. Written February 2021.
